Herbarium and Botanical Museum

 

A Herbarium and Botanical Museum of the Plants of Western Ghats has been established in Pilikula Development Authority, Mangalore under the financial Assistance from Karnataka Biodiversity Board (Rs. 120.00 Lakhs). The project team consists of Dr. H. Sooryaprakash Shenoy, Principal Scientist; Mr. Ramakrishna Marati, Scientific Officer; Mrs. Veenakumarai, Junior Scientific Officer; Mrs. Swapna, Assistant Curator and Mr. Ravi, Field Assistant.
Herbarium: During the project period (2011-2018), Pilikula Botany Section Team conducted several field trips in Belgaum (Belagavi), Uttara Kannada, Shimoga (Shivamogga), Chickamagalur, Udupi, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts falling under the Western Ghats belt and collected plants specimens. These specimens were processed, dried and pasted on to herbarium sheets, labeled and deposited in Herbarium cup-boards as per the guidelines of Botanical Survey of India. The details of the herbarium are as follows.
Botanical Museum:  During field surveys, different plant materials like seed samples, wood samples, Non-Timber forest products etc also collected and displayed in the Museum. The museum contains Seed samples of the different plant species, Transverse and Cross wood sections of different species (Xylarium), Wooden planks of different tree species, Crude drug samples, Paddy samples, Non-timber forest products and Blowup photographs of important plants.
It is the only Herbarium and Botanical Museum in Costal Karnataka region and reference centre for Botanists/Researchers/Students.  Demonstration on herbarium preparation is being given to students and research scholars of various institutes/colleges/Universities. Herbarium authentification is also done here.
